The DAC — digital-to-analog converter — is the bridge between your digital sources and everything downstream. Every streaming service, every FLAC file, every CD plays through one. It’s often the most technically discussed component in a modern hi-fi system, and also one of the most misunderstood. The marketing noise around DAC chips, architectures, and measurements is dense. Here’s what to pay attention to and what to filter out.
What a DAC Actually Does
Your music files exist as numbers — sequences of binary values representing air pressure samples captured during recording. A DAC converts those numbers back into a continuously varying voltage that an amplifier can work with. The process involves reconstruction filtering, interpolation, and analog output stage design. Any weakness in this chain produces audible artifacts.
The simplest summary: a DAC’s job is to reproduce the numbers it receives as accurately and cleanly as possible, then hand off a low-noise, low-distortion analog signal to the amplifier.
The Architecture Question: R2R vs Delta-Sigma
You’ll encounter two primary DAC architectures:
Delta-sigma (∆Σ) converters oversample the audio at very high rates and use a noise-shaping process to push quantization noise above the audible range. They use simpler, cheaper resistor networks and are the dominant architecture in modern consumer DACs. Chips from ESS Technology (Sabre series), AKM (Velvet Sound), Burr-Brown (Texas Instruments), and Cirrus Logic are all delta-sigma designs. Most of what you encounter under $2,000 uses them.
R2R (resistor ladder) converters use a precision resistor network to sum weighted voltages corresponding to each bit. This is technically simpler in concept but extremely demanding to manufacture accurately — the resistors must be matched to tolerances of fractions of a percent. R2R DACs from companies like Denafrips, Audio-GD, and Holo Audio require expensive, carefully matched resistor networks. They have a devoted following among listeners who prefer their sonic character.
The honest take: neither architecture is inherently superior. Excellent examples of both measure well and sound excellent. The preference for one over the other is partly technical, partly subjective. Don’t let architecture debates distract you from listening to specific implementations.
Chip vs. Implementation
This is the most important concept for DAC buyers to internalize: the DAC chip is far less important than the implementation around it.
Two DACs using the same ESS9038 chip can measure very differently and sound very different. The quality of the output stage (op-amp-based vs. discrete transistor vs. tube output), the power supply design, the quality of the voltage regulators, the layout and grounding of the PCB — all of these affect the final result more than which specific chip sits at the center.
This is why a $200 DAC using a flagship ESS chip doesn’t automatically match a $1,000 DAC using the same chip. The designer’s skill and the quality of the surrounding hardware matter enormously.
Connectivity: Inputs and Outputs
Before buying, map your actual signal chain.
Inputs you need: USB is standard for computer audio. Coaxial and optical (Toslink) cover most streamers, CD players, and TVs. AES/EBU (XLR digital) appears on pro-grade and high-end consumer equipment. I²S over HDMI appears on some streamer-DAC pairings. Determine what your source outputs before buying.
Outputs you need: Most DACs provide unbalanced RCA outputs. Balanced XLR outputs appear at mid-range and above. If your amplifier has XLR inputs and the signal path is genuinely balanced, pay for a DAC with balanced outputs. If not, RCA is fine.
MQA: MQA (Master Quality Authenticated) is a controversial audio format used by Tidal’s highest tier. If you’re a Tidal subscriber interested in MQA playback, look for MQA decoder support. Tidal has been shifting strategy on MQA; confirm its current status before treating this as a deciding factor.
What to Prioritize by Budget
Under $300: This range has improved dramatically. DACs from SMSL, Topping, Cambridge Audio, and Schiit offer measurements that would have cost ten times as much a decade ago. At this level, prioritize connectivity (does it have the inputs you need?), the quality of the analog output stage, and build quality. Measurements-wise, most are genuinely excellent.
The Schiit Modi Plus (~$149) is a well-regarded entry point — clean USB and optical inputs, discrete output stage, and honest performance at the price.
$300–$1,000: You gain better output stages, more inputs, true balanced outputs, and more attention to power supply quality. R2R options begin appearing at the upper end of this range. This is where differences between specific products begin to be audible on quality amplification and speakers.
$1,000 and above: Diminishing returns accelerate, but so does build quality, component quality, and support. This is where discrete output stages, premium power supplies, and highly refined R2R implementations live. At this level, your amplifier and speakers need to be resolving enough to reveal the differences.
What to Ignore
Obscure chip names used as marketing: A DAC ad that leads with “Dual ESS9038PRO!” without explaining the output stage and power supply design is telling you very little. Ask what’s around the chip.
Excessive bit-depth and sample-rate claims: A DAC that supports 32-bit/768kHz PCM and DSD512 is not necessarily better than one that handles 24-bit/192kHz well. No commercial recording uses 32-bit audio. The implementation at 16-bit/44.1kHz — the actual format of CD-quality lossless streaming — matters more than headline maximum specification support.
Jitter claims: Modern DACs with asynchronous USB reclocking handle jitter from sources very well. In a well-designed system, source jitter is not your primary concern.
The Practical Test
If you can audition DACs before buying — through a dealer, or a return-friendly retailer — do so. Trust your ears on your own music through your own amplifier and speakers. A DAC that measures beautifully but sounds clinical in your system is wrong for your system. A DAC that measures slightly less perfectly but makes you want to keep listening is right.
The best DAC is the one you stop thinking about because the music sounds so right.
